About The Cottage
The
home was built in 1926 in the Storybook Style, a subset of the
Period Revival Tudor style. This style is relatively rare and was
popular from the early 1920's to the Great Depression. The
Storybook Cottage most prominent attribute is one of “whimsy”. The
design of the house was commissioned by Dr. Mensis Macfarlane and
patterned after a home in the Avenues neighborhood of Salt Lake
City. Dr Macfarlane and his wife Katherine Palmer Macfarlane were
descendant’s of early Mormon pioneers. Dr. Macfarlane, was the
first physician born in Southern Utah to practice medicine in
Cedar City. In addition to his contributions to the medical
history of the time, he was active in the community both
politically and socially.
This Storybook Tudor home
is located just 2 blocks from the Utah
Shakespearean Festival (USF) and Southern Utah University (SUU) and
3 blocks from the new Heritage Theater and Festival Hall event
venues. The Storybook Cottage offers distinctive accommodations
convenient to dining, shopping, cultural and recreational
activities.
Cedar
City was established in 1850's as The Iron Mission by Brigham Young,
then leader of the LDS church. Located in Southwestern Utah it is
nestled at the base of the Mountains overlooking the Great Basin and
the gateway to Southern Utah’s National Parks and year round
recreation opportunities. Zion National Park is just 56 miles from
the B & B, Bryce Canyon National Park is 78 miles away and Cedar
Breaks National Monument is just 32 miles. Brian Head Resort is 32
miles from the B & B where outdoor enthusiasts enjoy skiing and snow
boarding in the winter and Mountain biking in the summer and fall.
The B
& B is located on a lovely tree lined street in the City’s Historic
Downtown District . The Mormon trail from Salt Lake to Southern
California is now I-15 and connects Cedar City from the Mexican
border to the Canadian border. Located between Las Vegas and Salt
Lake, we are a convenient destination from each city by car. Air
transportation is available at the Cedar City Municipal Airport
served by Sky West a Delta Airlines partner. We enjoy a four season
climate, with relatively mild winters and summers. It is possible on
a spring day to enjoy skiing in the morning at Brian Head Resort,
golf in the afternoon in Utah’s warmer Dixie and gaming and Las
Vegas Style entertainment in the evening at Mesquite, NV.
